RACISM: ITS INSIDIOUS SOURCE AND CONTINUATION
I have been trying to compose a post about racism during Black History Month. Unfortunately, I keep running up against my emotions are so mixed with this issue that makes this almost impossible.
I am thoroughly convinced the issue of racism in this country was built into the very formation of our government. I was attempting to find an origin that would explain even a little what had happened. And, guess what, I found it.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth. I could wish their Numbers were increased. And while we are, as I may call it, Scouring our Planet, by clearing America of Woods, and so making this Side of our Globe reflect a brighter Light to the Eyes of Inhabitants in Mars or Venus, why should we in the Sight of Superior Beings, darken its People? why increase the Sons of Africa, by Planting them in America, where we have so fair an Opportunity, by excluding all Blacks and Tawneys, of increasing the lovely White and Red? But perhaps I am partial to the Compexion of my Country, for such Kind of Partiality is natural to Mankind. Notes on the State of Virginia
THOMAS JEFFERSON
“Its animals were feeble and stunted in comparison to the hardy European breeds, and its native peoples hairless, enervated, and barely capable of reproducing themselves. Jefferson argued quite movingly for the nobility of Native Americans to bolster his case against Buffon as to the climactic splendor and present and future greatness of America. But as part of this argument he also argued for the deep inferiority of African Americans.”
“I advance it therefore as a suspicion only, that the blacks, whether originally a distinct race, or made distinct by time and circumstances, are inferior to the whites in the endowments of both body and mind. It is not against experience to suppose, that different species of the same genus, or varieties of the same species, may possess different qualifications. Will not a lover of natural history then, one who views the gradations in all the races of animals with the eye of philosophy, excuse an effort to keep those in the department of man as distinct as nature has formed them? This unfortunate difference of color, and perhaps of faculty, is a powerful obstacle to the emancipation of these people.” Source: Of Racism and Remembrance by Aaron Garrett
Now, to top all of this off is this newspaper clipping whose source I have very little knowledge of. I am sure that Google search will show the origin of many of the statements. I did find the sources for Franklin and Jefferson easily, but the others are for you to search for or accept. This does not mean that they are for you to search for or accept. I had just reached a level of disgust that I had to leave something for you to do.
I do not mean to infer that these are attitudes that remain unchanged throughout the lives of these men. I have read papers written later by most of them that softened their attitude somewhat. However, the attitudes that the original founders and representatives of our country had have followed down through the years and subtlely and viciously found a country that is still not ready to responsibly and reasonably address these issues.
And so the prisons are filled with black men whose children are raised in a society where their worth is not recognized, black women are disproportionately the head of households where children are exposed to the consequence of being a part of the “underclass,” and where the majority of the non-affected are quick to judge, blame and then fertilize the continuation of the status quo.
I KNOW I PROMISED NO MORE HEALTH UPDATES, BUT I LIED.
In my last post I know I promised that health issues would be verboten in the future. I lied. While that was my goal, things took another turn in the Days Of Sarah’s Health.
I was having difficulty regulating my blood pressure, experiencing vertigo, and having a rapid pulse among a variety of other symptoms. After innumerable visits to the doctor it was decided I had POT Syndrome. Let there be no remarks from the peanut gallery regarding the name, please. I have already drawn all of the conclusions there are to draw without any help whatsoever.
Settling on that diagnosis, the doctors then decided that perhaps a CT scan of the brain would eliminate that one in a million chance there was a brain tumor. Well, no brain tumor, however…as was explained to me, an incidental diagnosis determined I had an aneurysm. One of those pesky precursors to a stroke that those of my age start to have nightmares about. It is a subdural cranial aneurysm that is 7mm in size. That’s not a great size. Why? Well, 7mm is on the cusp of doing something about it or letting it go and monitoring it. More CT scans, MRIs and doctor visits led to an appointment at Abbot Northwestern for a Cerebral Angiography.
I have been fairly paralyzed by this for about a week. Then slowly I have come to grips with it and have an abiding belief that everything will be FINE! That “FINE!” is to pronounced with the longest “F” sound possible.
So, my appointment is on the 11th. The goal was to get all of this in before the end of the year since I have hit my max out of pocket expenses for the year and after the first I will be on Medicare. So, that should explain my absence except for the occasional inappropriate comment or political rant.
OSTEOWARRIORS, UNITE!
I know that most of you know about the past year’s worth of surgery, testing, relapse and on and on and on. I at peace with the process now and I just want to share what a very good friend I made from down in the South (you know who you are, Allie) who helped tremendously with the process of getting to this point and with a woman up here in the Northland (and, yes, Ellen it’s you!) who has also been a constant source of realism and humor!
Well, if you don’t have enough information by now, did you know WE HAVE A DAY? Unfortunately, it seems random depending on where you are, so I have decided EVERYDAY IS OSTOMY DAY! And there are even LOVE NOTES, T-SHIRTS (Of course there are T-SHIRTS!), NURSES, PAPER DOLLS, COMING OUT STICKERS and too much detail. Besides, I think I have already overwhelmed you!
So, from here on out, thanks to Ellen, I will be known as:

FOLLOWING MY OWN ADVICE
I finally did it. Set up that secondary email account so that all of those fabulous shopping sites I love, registrations for retail outlets, email collection requests by hapless clerks and cleaned out my main account for more meaningful content. Like, uh, when someone repins one of my posts on PInterest, and the ever pleading requests for donations from the Obama Campaign. Yes, this is a secret address and makes me feel rather clandestine, sneaky or stealthy, depending upon the level of control I wish to exert.
As I work in retail, the amount of script I have to deliver to complete a sale now also contains this advice. I love it! As a matter of fact, I don’t care if they make up a totally fake one except I am sure they keep track of the “undeliverable” emails each person collects.
I should mention at this point that asking for email addresses can lead to some unexpected answers. I guarantee that the average of people with an “@aol” account measures closer to 70 than 60, that the guy with the greasy hair and ripped Fleshgod Apocalypse t-shirt has an email address he should have changed when he became eligible for a driver’s license, and then the hello-kitty crowd are almost too saccharine to make you wish the death metal dude was back. Oh, the travails of the working girl.
I am hoping that this gets this email fixation out of my system and I can return to the more important aspects of the interweb.
WHAT I AM WILLING TO DO, WON’T YOU, TOO?
This is my commitment: I will send this letter to anyone in the public eye who chooses to use any derogatory phrase when referring to any minority. I have been aware of the pain that this type of rhetoric causes from the time I first saw fire hoses used upon civil rights workers in the 50s. Will you please join me in this pledge and recognize that the time and the cost spent for this is action is minimal when you look at how every small action against hate of any kind is a victory! I will edit this as necessary to address the specifics of this type of hateful behavior.
This particular letter is being sent to : Gordon Beckham and DSean Jackson.
Dear ——
I am taking this time to write to you about your recent homophobic remarks. Unfortunately, this is occurring far too often with the athletes that the youth of the United States admire. I am certain that if you look around your family, your friends, and your teammates you will find a gay or Lesbian person there. As certain as I am that there is at least one such person there, I am also certain that you would never want hateful slurs to be directed to them.
In view of these facts, I am hoping that in the future you will only make positive statements when referring to this segment of our society. I don’t think that name calling or bullying was ever anything your mother wanted you to do with your fame. As a mother and a grandmother I am hoping that you would take the time to apologize for these remarks and apologize to your mother and your fans for having used them.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I wish you a long and healthy career and hope that you never suffer from the unkind words of others.
Sincerely,
